How Often to Feed a Puppy

Puppies should be fed multiple times a day, to accommodate their metabolic rate. For the small breeds and especially the teacup and toy size, I always leave dry food in a bowl where they can get to it all the time. That's extremely important as their tiny little bodies need nutrition after a little playing and running around. Even while sleeping they will wake up and need a little food and water.

Feed your puppy three times a day, in the morning, early afternoon, and early evening, until she or he is six months of age. Thereafter, you can feed your dog twice a day, in the morning and evening. Always remember to provide plenty of fresh water at each mealtime and throughout the day.

Sometimes when a puppy goes to a new home, he or she eventually changes puppy food. If you're going to change the food, please do it gradually. I'll be sending some puppy food with your puppy. If you switch to a different brand mix a little of the new brand with the old. Mix in a little more each day. That should help, so they won't get stomach upset.

Water

Water is another important subject. Here the puppies are getting filtered well water. I make sure puppies never have water with fluoride and certain other chemicals in it. The main ingredient in rat poison is fluoride. If you use tap water your puppy might get a loose bowel from the change over. I recommend a good water filter. It's good for both puppies and us!

When you go to pick your puppy up from the airport, please take some water with you. For the tiny breeds, I strongly recommend putting raw honey in the water. About a tablespoon per cup. I keep honey in their water until they are about 6 months old. It is not only good for them; it helps keep the blood sugar stable. When people feed puppies sugar or karo syrup. That might help in a pinch, if you don't have raw honey. But when they come down from that it might mean a larger drop in sugar levels. The honey will keep sugar levels stable and you won't have to worry especially if you work and are gone for hours at a time. Walmart around here has raw honey. I get mine at a local health food store. Always always have it handy. It's good in your tea in the mornings too.
