We periodically have adult dogs who need homes. They are either our retired breeders or dogs that are deemed unfit for breeding and did not pass the vet check.
Most of these dogs are used to being outside and will require training and lots of patience. Adult dogs are more of a challenge at first, but usually train a lot faster than puppies and will not go thru the chewing and destructive puppy stages. They may be spayed or neutered prior to leaving and their adoption fee is $75-300 (depending on their needs).
Some of these dogs I have raised, some I have not and I am not sure about their being around small children, so I am not sure how they might respond.
